I’m packed and ready. I’ve been working on my tan for the last week so I DON’T turn into a lobster on the first day. Tomorrow I’m leaving on a jet plane and heading back to my favorite little island in the middle of the ocean. I have the extreme honor of photographing the marriage of two of my dear dear friends, in the middle of a sacred valley. Please forgive me if I’m not quick to return your emails, and I probably wont have my phone close to me often. But I’ll let you know how it all goes, and can’t wait to show you the pictures. Mahalo

The Oakland Sessions with Mr. Casey Hurt

I mentioned a few days ago that I would post some of the images from my time in Oakland with Casey and our good friend, and producer/engineer, Eric. They wanted to experiment a little in preparation for recording a new album. The experiment was trying to figure out how capture the raw magic and emotion of a song instead of today’s version of over producing the heck out of artists and their songs. They transformed Eric’s Oakland loft into a live-jam-session-like recording studio for a couple of days and set out to capture moments. Some very talented musicians came out to join in the magic, including Eric himself (on sax), Keith Kelly (sax), Andrew Traylor (drums) and Mike Meagher (bass). My job was to hang out, make tea, and document the experience. It was awesome. The first night of recording, Oakland was hit with one of the biggest thunderstorms in it’s history with a record number of 750 lighting strikes in 4 hours over the bay. The skies were lit in a contant stream of brilliant flashes all night long. They poured their hearts out as the rain pored down and the skies accompanied Casey’s voice. Seriously, it was majestic. Case said afterward that it was like singing with God. And the next day, the skies cleared and gave way to bright blue skies and great spirits. An awesome way to start the week of collaboration. Casey has been updating his YouTube channel every Tuesday with new music, so we shot a video for each of the three songs recorded. They got mostly a live-one take feel for each of them, with the exception of adding the saxophone recordings the next day. So much talent and inspiration to be around all of these musicians! Amazing job Eric Schultz, Keith Kelly, Andrew Traylor and Mike Meagher.

How to have an awesome camping trip…

1. Find a magical place
2. Plan to do nothing.
3. And do that with someone you love.

Simple. At least that is that is my idea of an ideal camping trip. I arrived home last week from a month of traveling and working, most of that time was without my love. I didn’t mean to plan it this way but it just so happened that I returned to him a few days before my birthday (reason for celebration!). So he, being the handsome romantic that he is, immediately swept me away from regular life. He surprised me by taking me up North to camp on the beach right below Santa Barbara (Carpinteria State Beach). We spent 3 days laying around, watching the waves, cooking by the fire. It was glorious. I spend so much time either in front of a computer, or working in the city – I had forgotten how much nature fuels my soul. It is my ultimate inspiration and spirit nourisher. Thanks babe for always knowing exactly what I need, even when I don’t.

April in Oregon

March was full of Headshots (check out laurenhurtheadshots.com) and graphic design projects. And then I spent most of last month on the road again and it was truly wonderful. Casey and I headed up to Oakland, CA to working on a new recording project that he’s starting (yes, that means you can be expecting a new album in the near-ish future).

If you haven’t followed this blog for long, you may not know that in addition to making beautiful pictures for people all over the USA – I also am a very proud wife of an amazingly talented musician and I follow him everywhere to document music life as well. Casey is starting a new album that I’m convinced is going to be the best yet (read: EVER) and I tagged along to Oakland, CA to be there for the recording of the first 3 songs. Actually, instead of explaining it now, I’ll post some pictures in my next blog post, how ’bout that? From Oakland I flew up to Oregon to shoot some lovely portrait sessions and get tons of quality nephew time in. I think that I brought the sun up from Los Angeles when I got there because my time in Portland happened to land on the most beautiful weekend in my memory there. I felt spoiled… Like the rose city was romanticizing me back to herself.

I’ll be posting more sessions from my trip in the next week. But below is a taste from my first shoot in Portland. Sheri and her girls are so beautiful sitting in the sunlight of waterfront park!

Belles Bells | Los Angeles Band Photography

I’ve had a lot of people ask me where they can get the song that plays on my website (laurenhurt.com weddings and portaits section) and who it is by. Up until now I’ve only had a bummer answer to give… it’s unreleased and you can’t find it anywere… (sad face). UNTIL NOW! The super awesome band behind everyone’s favorite song “Favorite Sweater” is called Belles Bells, and it is a side project of my husbands ( the super talented Casey Hurt —> Website). They have been working away in the studio and will be coming out with a EP very soon. I’m so excited for the world to hear this music. Casey’s music is usually raw and moody and makes you feel deeply. But Belles Bells is the lighter side, more indie pop that you can’t help but smile and dance to. I love it and the secret tracks that I have are what gets me through long days with a smile on my face. The official release date hasn’t been scheduled yet, but I’ll let you all know as soon as it happens.

In preparation for all of that, we just shot some band promo pictures for them. Belles Bells consists of Casey Hurt, Chris Teft Hughs, and Mimi Boncato of Bella Boncat. And they are awesome. Enjoy the pictures and check out “Favorite Sweater” by clicking the banner at the bottom of the page!
